Relay for Life Corona, CA

As my heart aches from the pain of missing one of my very best friends... the Relay for Life has taken on a whole new meaning. Thank you to everyone who has prayed for Noel to be healed from breast cancer. The Lord decided to heal her a different way than we would have all wanted and He took her to heaven on April 8th. There are many broken hearts left behind and I would appreciate prayers for her family and friends, especially her mom, sister, and the special men in her life: Freddy and her two young boys, Mateo and Diego.

At her service, our friend Qiana asked if we all wanted to do a cancer walk in memory of Noel. Of course we all said yes. We will also be relaying for Qiana, who is a cancer survivor and all our loved ones who have been effected by cancer.

Pajama Night at the Ronald McDonald House

What an absolute blessing it was to be able to host a pajama night at the Ronald McDonald House in Loma Linda, CA. We met some amazing families and volunteers. We were able to provide the children with new pajamas, books and toothbrushes through our Pepsi Refresh Project.

We were even able to take a tour of the house. Wow it was amazing!! I love what the Ronald McDonald House is doing. They are helping families when they really need it and in a way that is so encouraging.

Thank you Ronald McDonald House Loma Linda for all you do and for allowing us to be a part of that in a small way on Wednesday, March 2nd!

A Special thank you to our awesome volunteers that came out to help Randy and I :) Thank you Kim, Amanda and Emily!!

Kindergarten Sweet Dreams

What an amazing morning we had today. We were able to deliver "sweet dreams" to 3 kindergarten classrooms at a school located in a low-income area of Southern California.

Miss Operation Sweet Dreams, Susie, was awesome as usual with the kids. Susie and Kaitlyn helped the kids pick out a book and toothbrush. Each student received a new pair of pajamas, a toothbrush and a book.

Cookies and juice were also provided. Thank you Jessica, for donating the snacks! They added a special touch to our pajama table :)

Today we were joined by Brittany, Miss California International. She, too, was amazing with the little ones. Thanks for joining us today Brittany!!

Today our queens were able to crown a precious little girl as "princess for the day". We soon found out that this sweet girl is battling cancer. Please keep her in your prayers.

Our Kindergarten Sweet Dreams day was a success! Thank you Pepsi, Global Giving and Good for making this day possible!! A special thank you to our volunteers today: Jessica, Brittany, Cynthia, Susie, Carolina, Kaitlyn (not pictured) and Randy (not pictured). You guys are awesome!! Bake Sale tomorrow :)

Our Teen Miss Operation Sweet Dreams queen, Kelly, is hosting a bake sale tomorrow. She wanted a fun, hands on way to raise money for a special project and she did such an amazing job preparing her bake sale. I'll post more pictures tomorrow.

I wish you could all attend our bake sale and take a look at all these amazing baked goodies :)

100 books for our 100 Mile Club family

I received a message today from Kara Lubin, founder of The 100 Mile Club, asking if we would be able to donate some books to a member of their 100 Mile Club family. Kara is such an amazing woman and advocate of adolescent fitness. She is also an awesome friend, role model, and my Pepsi Refresh Project sister (hehe)... how could I say no?

So I pulled together some books and took them over to her place tonight. She will be shipping them to Jessica, of Kids-A-Part in Vermont, tomorrow. These books will be distributed to children who's mothers are incarcerated.

I received and email from a very caring teacher asking for pajamas for some of her students that were in need. This teacher has been using her own resources to purchase items for her students. She is absolutely amazing!! Teachers like this are the best!!

Sweet Dreams for Inspire

Thank you Pepsi!! Our Pepsi Refresh Project has been so amazing! It has not only allowed us to reach out to so many more groups than we would have been able to do this year but it's also allowed us to connect with some of the most amazing groups in our community.

I have been so honored to have been able to connect with Inspire Life Skills of Corona. This group of aged-out foster care kids have touched my heart so much!

Thank you Kristi and Inspire for allowing us to be a part of your Thanksgiving.

On Tuesday, we enjoyed a yummy dinner with some fabulous Pepsi drinks :) The youth shared what they were thankful for and I got a little teary. They are such precious young adults!

Then we were able to present each of them with "sweet dreams".

They were all very excited about their new sleepwear :) Some of the comments I heard were, "These are so soft and feel like a warm blanket", "I don't ever want to take this off", "I want to go to bed now", "I love it!" and of course the smiles said it all. They were very appreciative.

I am so blessed to be given the opportunity to be able to do something as small as provide sleepwear for deserving children in our community... which touches the hearts of those all around in a huge way.

Erin Gruwell signs copies of Freedom Writers for Inspire

A couple weeks ago I had the honor of meeting Erin Gruwell. Wow what an inspiration!! She is an amazing woman and teacher. She is definitely a role model!

She so graciously signed a copy for each of the youth at Inspire. These books were to be used for our Winter "sweet dreams" delivery for the awesome youth. Thank you Pepsi for allowing us to (in the words of Kristi, founder and director of Inspire), "help one charity by helping another charity". The purchase of these books helped The Freedom Writers Foundation while helping Inspire Life Skills.

Thank you Erin for being so amazing and setting a great example of a servants heart. You are such an inspiration!!

Congratulations to our new Operation Sweet Dreams queens. Both young ladies have helped out a lot this past year and I'm honored to have them as our new queens.

Kelly is our new Teen Miss Operation Sweet Dreams. This past year she has help collect toothbrushes for our pajama packs and had the opportunity to represent OSD in our Pepsi Refresh Project magazine advertisement.

Susie, our new Miss Operation Sweet Dreams, accompanied us to skid row in Los Angeles in August. She helped distribute "sweet dreams" to homeless children while she was representing her city as Circle City Miss Corona.

I am very excited for this new year with these two amazing young ladies.

Tag Reading System donation for local special education teacher

We wanted to use our funds for some special projects and after reading this story I knew we could do something for this group of special education students in our community.

Thank you Pepsi for helping us "refresh" this group of students and help them reach their full potential through reading. I know these Tag Readers will make a difference for this class and future students.

This group is still in need of additional Tag Reading Systems and books. You may help their effort by donating through their Donors Choose page.

That's how many toothbrushes our AMAZING volunteer, Marlene, collected for our local needy children.

Marlene hosted a toothbrush drive at Corona Friends Church last month and collected 612 toothbrushes. She did this all on her own! What a HUGE blessing!! We were running VERY low on toothbrushes and thanks to her and everyone who donated a toothbrush... we will be able to bless over 600 more children with a toothbrushes :)

Project Hope School

I had a great time at Project Hope School in Orange, on Saturday. I wasn't able to take pictures but I got one of our pajama table. I took my husband's camera with me so I'll have to get the pictures from him and post them soon. Thank you to my long-time friend (best friend), Breanne, for coming with me. We had a blast together.

Project Hope School was founded after a schoolteacher began teaching local homeless children out of the back of her car and saw a distinct need in the community. It is now a small school with five classrooms, that offers instruction in small, multi-grade classrooms where students work at their own level.

OUR VISIT:
Our morning started with Starbucks (of course!). We both went to bed really late the night before so coffee was a must. When we got to Project Hope School we were greeted by Pam, the organization's Executive Director. It was awesome to meet this amazing woman! We then started unloading our supplies/donations. I always enjoy setting up our pajama table. Looking at all those new pajamas stacked by size, and knowing they're going to go to a child who is in need of new jammies... (sigh)... what a blessing!

When the families started to arrive we started our routine. A child picks out a book, then a toothbrush... then the fun part... new pajamas!! Once they're all done we pack it in a reusable tote and hand it to that child with a huge smile on his/her face. Did I mention this is such a blessing to see? :) I love it!!

We delivered 58 "sweet dreams" to the children at Project Hope School. Thank you Pepsi, Global Giving and GOOD.

Teen and Miss Operation Sweet Dreams - Essay Contest

Our Teen and Miss Operation Sweet Dreams essay contest is coming soon!!

Application information will be available next week.

Our Queen Program was started in 2009 as a fun volunteer opportunity for young ladies in our community. This year we will be crowning a Teen and Miss Operation Sweet Dreams queen. Our queens will have the opportunity to work directly with Operation Sweet Dreams to help plan events, fill pajama packs, deliver "sweet dreams" and everything in between.

Each queen will be awarded with a beautiful crown, embroidered sash, and the opportunity to serve as the 2010-2011 Teen or Miss Operation Sweet Dreams queen.

This is a community service title that is open to young ladies and women in Southern California.

There will not be a formal pageant, nor will a cash prize be awarded.

Crowing will take place during an Operation Sweet Dreams event in November 2010.

Teen Division: 12 years old - 17 years old
Miss Division: over 18 years old

I just want to take a moment to introduce you all to this sweet and AMAZING little princess named Jamie. She is 7 years old and already making a difference in the lives of those around her. She is up for a Pepsi grant this month and I would love to see her move up fast. So please vote for her and tell all your family and friends to vote too. Voting is super fast and easy... and makes a huge impact.

Jaime is a 7 year old little girl with epilepsy. She spends her free time trying to comfort other kids like her by delivering care packages. She is truly a special little girl!! :)

Please join us on August 8th at our night with the Lake Elsinore Storm baseball team. They will be hosting an awesome pajama drive for us :) Kids get to come to the game in their pjs and get in free!! Adults will receive free admission when they bring a new pair of pajamas to benefit Operation Sweet Dreams. Slumber party themed games will be played on the field before the game and kids can run the bases after the game :) Can't wait for this amazing night. Thank you Lake Elsinore Storm Baseball!!

Check out this little cutie!! This is Daniel :) He just turned 5 and is already helping collect pajamas for local needy children! He collected 7 pajama sets, 25 books and 2 toothbrushes. Way to go Daniel!!

He used his 5th birthday as an opportunity to help spread the word about Operation Sweet Dreams and collect some much needed items. Thank you Daniel! You are a very sweet boy and you're going to make a lot of kids very happy when they receive the stuff you collected. You encourage us and make us proud!

We are a Pepsi Refresh Project Finalist

Thank you for all the votes and support! I am so excited to share that we are a finalist in the Pepsi Refresh Project. Official grant recipients will be announce on June 22nd on the Pepsi Refresh Everything website.

There are 3 days left in the Pepsi Refresh Everything Project. It has been a crazy and very busy month trying to spread the word about the grant. We are currently in the top 10 and we need your help staying there. Please vote for us every day until May 31st. Thank you!!

If we finish the month in one of the top 10 spots we will receive a $25,000 grant. We will use this grant to provide "sweet dreams" this summer :) About 2,000 children will be blessed with new pajamas, toothbrushes and books through this grant. Your vote counts... so please vote :)

Kelly is our new Teen Leader. She will be working closely with Operation Sweet Dreams this year. She has already been a wonderful addition to our group. Our goal is not only to help children in need but also to give the youth in our community the opportunity to do the same. Kelly has already held a toothbrush drive for us! She has also been busy spreading the word about Operation Sweet Dreams.

I think we all know someone who would be blessed by a pair of new pajamas for their child(ren). It could be a struggling family who simply cannot afford to purchase a new pair of pajamas for their child or it could be a family that could possibly purchase new pajamas but would appreciate the help with a free pair because that would mean they could use that money for something else they really need for their family.

When we first started we would go months without receiving anything in our mailbox. Then we started receiving junk mail. We normally wouldn't check out box too often because there wasn't really a need. But... we recently checked our box and there was some pretty awesome things in there :)

You guys have touched my heart more than you know!! I would be lying if I said there aren't ever times when I wonder if what I'm doing is making a difference. Then I see a smiling face as a child receives a pair of new pajamas! Other times I wonder how could I ever continue... after all I'm just one person. That is when someone new emails me, sends me a pair of pajamas in the mail, says thank you, asks for a pair of pajamas for a child in need or simply says, "way to go"... and everything changes.

Yes, I started out with a few pairs of pajamas just wanting to make a difference in a few children's lives... but now... well now, it has grown into something bigger than myself. You know I never really understood what people meant when they used that term, "bigger than myself", but now I do. Operation Sweet Dreams has turned into a community of people wanting to make a difference through the simple gift of a new pair of pajamas. I love the people in my community! They have embraced my project of providing sweet dreams and so many have asked, "how can I help?". I have even received donations from people in my blog community that have been touched by Operation Sweet Dreams and have a desire to help. To all of you... thank you... from the bottom of my heart!!

I will now be checking my box more often :)

Wow I can't believe it's been a month since I posted on our blog. I have been dealing with some health problems for over a month now and I'm glad to be feeling better and am ready to get back to work. I am not completely better yet but I just can't wait to jump back into Operation Sweet Dreams. I started Operation Sweet Dreams when I was pregnant and throwing up all day... I think I can handle getting back into the swing of things :)

Although I have not posted in a month... I have been busy working on ideas.

Hi everyone! Thank you following Operation Sweet Dreams and for all your support. I haven't been able to blog as much as I would like to and our website needs to be updated as well. I have been dealing with vertigo which makes simple things very difficult. I have emails I still need to respond to and I am very sorry for not getting back to everyone yet. I even had some emails in my spam box that I didn't know I had :( I will get back to everyone this week. You all mean so much to me!!

We have a lot of exciting things coming up this month! Tomorrow our volunteers will be having a "pajama party" and packing over 100 pairs of pajamas for children and teens in Corona and Riverside. I'll post pictures this week :) Thank you to Tim & Megan Bridge who funded our pajamas for the group of teens at INSPIRE, 200 toothbrushes, and over 120 new books for our pajama packs!! Thank you to Jessica Raya who funded pajamas for our "100 Sweet Dreams Giveaway" at the 100 Mile Club's Walk for Kids. Thank you to C28 for providing the bags for our sweet dreams.

This coming week we will be visiting INSPIRE and delivering "sweet dreams". Saturday is our 100 Sweet Dreams Giveaway in Corona at the Walk for Kids!

And now for some more COOL NEWS :)
I was contacted by the Lake Elsinore Storm Baseball team this week and they would like to dedicate one of their Family Nights to Operation Sweet Dreams. They had a beyond awesome idea of having a pajama night where the kids come dressed in their pajamas and adults get in free when they donate a pair of new pajamas to OSD. They would also like to have slumber party themed games on the field. How cool is that!?? Very exciting!! I'll keep you posted on the date of this event.

Solutions for Change is located in Vista, CA, where they are making a difference in the lives of homeless families. They have a 120-bed transitional housing center, designed to equip families and to help them regain their independence. A couple weeks ago while planning my daughters birthday party I posted a request on etsy for party favors and I was contacted by WeeKnit. This is my FAVORITE Etsy Shop!! I am so amazed with their work. They make the most amazingly, adorable finger puppets. I asked Jenny, one of the creators behind WeeKnit, if she could customize a set that looked like the characters of Kai-Lan. I was blown away by the set when it arrived. We went out to a low-income area in Corona this weekend and met families while they were out grocery shopping. We were able to put some children on our "Sweet Dreams List" and can't wait to get their new pajamas to them!

We also met a mother of a 10 year old and a newborn baby girl. They will both be receiving pajamas. Their mom asked to get a bigger size for the baby. She told us with an embarrassed look on her face that she only has newborn and 0-3 clothes for her baby. We are planning to bless her socks off with A LOT of new and gently used clothes when we deliver her pajamas. Yay!! Can't wait!!

Our One Year Anniversary

Our One Year Anniversary is tomorrow :) The one year anniversary of the Lord giving me the idea for Operation Sweet Dreams. I remember that day so clearly. I was sitting at home 8 months pregnant and huge haha! I was still thinking about the toy drive we held for Christmas and how cool it was to hand out those gifts to the children shopping with their parents at the grocery store in a low-income area. It was a random acts of kindness way of handing out the gifts. I remember praying and asking God what I was suppose to do with the 35 pajamas I had been collecting since September because I knew I was going to use them to bless kids with but just didn't know how. Then He answered my prayer with Operation Sweet Dreams. Wow what a blessing it has been to be a part of what God is doing through the simple gift of a new pair of pajamas.

This weekend we will celebrate our anniversary by "hitting the streets". We will going out to a couple grocery stores in a low-income area in our community and talking with families and letting them know what we are doing. We will invite them to be added to our list if they are in need of new pajamas for their children. The reality is that families that are most in need don't always have internet access so we will be going out to them. I CAN'T WAIT!!!

Our goal this month is to go to varies places throughout the Inland Empire and spread the word about Operation Sweet Dreams. We hope to meet many families that we can help this year. If you would like to help us this month please contact us at volunteer@operationsweetdreams.com.

I am very thankful to everyone who has helped make this past year a success. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! I can't wait to see what the Lord has planned for this next year. I have a feeling He's going to bless our socks off :)

One of the families on our Christmas list was a mom with 5 children... 2 of which were girls. They were gifted with Disney Princess dresses and accessories. They were extremely excited and thought it was so cool that they were able to borrow the queen's crowns. How adorable!!

This was the outcome of the Boy Scouts who partnered with us this Christmas to bless these children.

We had our prayers answered when Lissa from Claremont contacted us earlier this month and asked if the cub scouts she leads could help us out this Christmas. They agreed to "adopt" 5 of the families off our Christmas List. We were completely blown away when they asked us to ask the parents what they would like for Christmas. There were 5 dens that each adopted a family. They bought each child a few gifts and gifts for the parents as well. Awesome!! Thank you... thank you... thank you... to Lissa and the Cub Scouts that so generously blessed 5 of the families on our Christmas List this year. You blessed us and the families SO very much!!

Our Christmas Sweet Dreams were delivered to the "adopted" families at Chick-Fil-A in Corona (Hidden Valley Location). Thank you to Jan Meadows for donating free meals for the parents and free kids meals for the children on our Christmas list. They also donated a large tray of brownies for dessert. This is our favorite Chick-Fil-A and we were so excited we were able to host our event there. Thank you Casey & Jan Meadows.

Thank you to everyone who came out to help us at our Chick-Fil-A Pajama Drive. A special thank you to those who donated a pair of pajamas. An awesome KSGN listener heard about our pajama drive on the radio and stopped by after work. She brought in some pajamas, beanies, mittens, and even a jacket. These items were put in some of our Christmas Pajama packs.

Thank you to Corrie Curner and the students at her son's school. They are a small school but blessed us in a big way! Thank you so much!!

Operation Sweet Dreams Queen

Our Queen Program was originally started in April and was intended to be a monthly program, where the girl who collected the most pajama donations would be the queen the following month. We have only had one queen, Noel, who was our May Queen. We have held off on continuing with our Queen Program until now. We have chosen our 2009-2010 Queen and she will be announced as soon as she is notified and accepts :) It wasn't until this young lady came to mind that we decided to have an official queen. Once we introduce her there is no doubt you will agree with our choice! She will be working directly with Operation Sweet Dreams until the end of 2010.

If you would like to be apart of our Queen Program, please let us know at queen@operationsweetdreams.com. We will be choosing an Operation Sweet Dreams Princess soon :)

The Queen Program is a community service program and all extra activities that the queen participates in are funded personally by the founder.

We had the privilege of delivering our 1st "Sweet Dreams" to the 2nd/3rd grade combination classroom at Mission Bell Elementary in Riverside, CA. What a blessing! All the children were so precious! They loved their new pajamas, toothbrushes, books, shoes and of course those adorable puppies. It was so awesome to see the children's faces light up as they opened their gifts. These smiles have motivated us to keep fundraising so that more children are able to receive "sweet dreams" as well.

May Queen - Noel

We had a great time today at the (rescheduled) City of Corona Cinco de Mayo Parade. Here is a picture of our May Queen, Noel. The crowd loved her. Noel is one of my very bestest friends! Her beautiful smile and friendly personality shine so bright (even in pictures)... you would never know she has breast cancer. She is an inspiration!

We had so much fun participating in a community event and getting the word out about Operation Sweet Dreams. Thanks Noel for being our May Queen!

* We are still working on the detail to our Queen Program. However, Noel, was out representing Operation Sweet Dreams today to get the word out about our queen program. We hope to find the perfect queen soon :)

Our First Classroom

We are so excited about delivering "Sweet Dreams" to the 2nd/3rd grade class at Mission Bell Elementary in Riverside, CA. The original date has been rescheduled a few times due to a school closure, teacher's meetings, testing and other events but God has perfect timing. We had a few issues with the shoe company we went through and they have now be resolved. So because of God's perfect timing the children will still be able to get new shoes! The shoes are being sponsored by Lola's Hugs. The students will receive the new pajamas, toothbrushes, books, and shoes in a little over a week! Check back for pictures.
